About me

“I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.”

– Mary Anne Radmacher.

Hey! I’m Kirsten (or Kirst)

Welcome to my travel blog/humble abode, where you’ll find my ramblings from frolicking around the world.

So, travel makes me pretty happy…

A few fun facts about me:

I was first put on skis when I was under 2 years old. It was only shuffling along the snow then, but now after years of skiing in the Alps, it feels like second nature (the skiing, not the shuffling).

I have an American boyfriend who lives in Boston while I live in London, and we met in Melbourne, Australia. We’ve been together for almost 3 years now, so I write a little on the reality of a long distance relationship here, too.

…That’s also why you’ll find a lot of America and Australia content.

I love surfing but keep taking beginners lessons again and again. Practising and living in London aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. My post on Surfing in England will show you that…

I’m half Czech, half English. My Christmas is a strange affair, mixing both cultures. This post will explain it: A Czech-English Christmas

It sounds really middle class, but after masses of family holidays in the South of France and given my mum’s fear of flying, I was basically hand-reared on cruises. They’re actually pretty cool.

A few fun facts about this blog:

This blog started out when I studied abroad in Australia in 2012 as Kirsten does Oz. It all began with the thoughts and inevitable getting lost as an exchange student in Melbourne. And I did get lost. A lot.

I focus on my love for cities as well as plonking myself into big, natural landscapes. What you get out of both is so different but exciting.

I will never write about or suggest a place I’ve never been to, unless it’s actually to make the point I’ve not been there or to celebrate lovely postcards others have sent me. The point of this blog is my personal experiences.

I want to encourage people to study abroad. If you ever have the chance, grab it and be so clingy with it that if it were a love interest, they would run a mile and deem you ‘that crazy girl/boy’ they’ll never speak to again.

The experience is way more important than just being able to say you’ve been to a place. I want to make sure I really live it.

Enjoy my blog and I hope it inspires you in some way. :)

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Or email me at kirstovertheworld@gmail.com. Come and say hi, you’ll make my day.

All pictures are my own, unless otherwise stated. Please don’t take them (not that they’re even that great…) unless I’ve given permission.

  1. I did a Zoo late 2 years ago and loved it!! Am also fellow proud London girl who did a year abroad and absolutely believe every student should take the opportunity! I was in Martinique in the Caribbean and had the best year of my life exploring it and the other islands from Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago – and ended up moving back there later.
Good luck with the travel adventures!

    • Definitely, studying abroad is too good an opportunity to miss! That sounds incredible, I’d love to go to the Caribbean. I totally understand why you’d move back, you just fall in love with the place you’re in – I’m so keen to go back to Australia! Thank you so much :)

  2. hey kristen, thank you for following my blog. If you would like email notifications sent to you instantly, please come over and use your email address to subscribe on my blog. I have recently changed from wordpress com to wordpress org (nearly killed me) so when i post new posts, wordpress com users only get it on the reader and not instant email notifications.

but if you subscribe using your email address, you can get it instantly. :)

    have a good week ahead!

    • Hi Michelle!

I thought I had clicked ‘follow’ from my Reader before, but had to do it again – confused me! But I have signed up with my email address (unless that’s made the same embarrassing error) too :)
I check my Reader every day anyway so I’m covered on keeping up with your great posts!

      Have a great week too!

  3. Oh girl, do we have some commonalities. Im married to a Czech. Well his hertiage is Czech, he’s really American. His speciality is poppyseed kolaches…recipe passed down from his authentic straight off the boat Czech great grandmother.
And kayaking with orca. Join me in June on San Juan island, WA state. I’m so doing it. Already booked a ticket!
Looking forward to reading more of your blog.

    • Don’t we just?! I’ve had poppyseed kolaches before! Aw, must be lovely to have that influence on your food :) such a distinct cuisine.
That’s so exciting! I can’t wait to hear/read about it (I demand you do a LONG post on it!). I’m looking into going to Vancouver and around there to kayak with orcas in August – fingers crossed they’re still about.

  4. Boy do we have some commonalities! I’m married to a Czech..American that is. His specialty is poppy seed kolaches. And kayaking with orcas. Meet me at Friday Harbor, Washington state during the summer solstice this year. I’ve contacted the company and already booked the airline. There’s an event the night of the summer solstice called Orca Sing, where the native peoples come together at a park on the water’s edge and actually serenade the resident orca pods. Sometime they appear and sometimes they don’t.
Looking forward to reading more of your blog!

  5. Love your blog! I especially love your huge wish list haha, mines just as long! You’ve been to some pretty awesome places, can’t wait to read your posts :)

    • Thanks :) Love yours too, going to have a massive browse! Haha, I can’t help myself with wish lists, keep thinking of more and more. Can’t wait to read your posts too!

      • I’m exactly the same, I can’t stop planning (*ahem* dreaming about) travel adventures! It’s a hard life haha

      • Haha yep! I keep telling people “I’m going to go here… I’m going to go there soon…” and then realise money doesn’t grow on trees ;)

Down to planning trips properly it is then!

      • Forgot to say…my blog is still very new and I’ve yet to get all my travel experiences on there yet, but there’s lots and lots of posts to come! :) x

      • It looks great so far and I’ve enjoyed reading it already! :) I still haven’t got round to putting up a lot of stuff from a while back – it’s hard to keep up! x

  6. Hi there! I just stumbled across you via twitter :) I’m totally in love with australia – especially Melbourne! I spent about 2.5 years out there. Literally had to be dragged home… but I WILL return…someday… What’s your job in the travel industry aka Living the dream??!

    • Hey! Another Melbourne/Australia lover!

I know how you feel, I had to be dragged home too. I’m set on going back one day, loved it too much. It’s just the best.

I work for a travel website that publishes offers. I see from Twitter/your blog that you write for Travelettes?! I LOVE that site, very jealous!

      • Awww thanks Hun! I’ve been with them since they launched- the only original member left (apart from Katja of course haha). I’m in publishing, but *sigh* hopefully the travel writing dream will become a full time job someday! :)
My Boyf is Aussie and wants to return again- let’s hope he’s thinking of taking me back with him! Haha xx
